Chief Way joined the Navy in March of 1984. Following the completion of basic training and Aviation Electronics “A” school, he was assigned to Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron Twelve (HS-12) onboard the USS Midway (CV 41) at Yokosuka, Japan. In July of 1988, AT3 Way was transferred to VAQ-129 at Whidbey Island Washington, where he worked on the Navy’s EA-6B ICAP II Prowlers. Following his tour with VAQ-129, he returned back to Japan where he was again assigned to HS-12. He then spent the next four years onboard the USS Midway (CV-41) and USS Independence (CV-62).
Following the decommissioning of HS-12 in September of 1994, AT1 Way was transferred to NAF Atsugi Japan, where he later changed his Navy Rate to that of Navy Career Counselor (NC1).
In September of 1997, NC1 way returned to Everett Washington, where he was assigned to the USS Chandler (DDG-996) as the Command Career Counselor. In the Fall of 1999, following the ship’s decommissioning, NC1 Way was transferred to Fleet Reconnaissance Squadron Three (VQ-3) at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma. While stationed at VQ-3, NC1 Way was promoted to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. In the Spring of 2003, Chief Way transferred to the USS SAIPAN (LHA-2) at Norfolk, Virginia. In December of 2005, Chief Way was transferred to Commander, Naval Beach Group Two (CNBG2) at Little Creek, Virginia until his retirement on 30 September 2007.
Chief Way’s personal decorations include: Six Navy & Marine Corps Achievement medals, Two Airforce Achievement medals and Five Navy Good Conduct Medals.
Chief Way is currently serving as the Naval Science Instructor for the Navy Junior Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) at Port Angeles High School. He assumed that position on 21 August 2007.
Chief Way and his wife Miyuki have two grown children, Stephanie and Stephen.
