Administrator / Math Supervisor Strand Session Description:  This strand was designed particularly to provide principals / math supervisors / and educational leaders with the skills required to be an effective mathematics instructional leader.  There are four concurrent sessions with a luncheon sponsored by McDougal Littell Northwest Regional Manager Al Gosney, and featuring Dr. Tim Kanold as a keynote speaker.  Participants will have the choice of participating in four one hour and fifteen minutes sessions, or two 2.5 hour sessions, or of mixing and matching long and short sessions.  The sessions will cover everything from very basic math leadership to very high level math leadership, including "Math for the non-math principal", math Grade Level Expectations (GLE's) to math teacher professional development, to curriculum selection.

Session Descriptions

1.1  Math Grade Level Expectations and online Resource Support Presented by Rick Jennings Mathematics Program Supervisor, OSPI
The purpose of this session is to present the Mathematics Grade Level Expectations (GLE'S).  Participants will enhance their understanding of the GLE'S and how they support both the general and special education teacher as they meet the needs of all students.  Also included will be an introduction to the new online resources designed to support classroom instruction.  Repeated in session 3.1.

1.2  WASL Mathematics Assessment and Instructional Implications Presented by Bev Neitzel, State Mathematics Assessment specialist, OSPI
Effective professional development is critical to the success of educational reform and improved student achievement in mathematics.  In order to build deeper content knowledge, as well as to refine understanding of pedagogical issues, teachers need ongoing opportunities to continue their own learning.  In this session, participants will explore a variety of strategies to support teacher learning of mathematics content and pedagogy, and consider design implication for implementing the strategies.

1.3  Exploring Strategies for Mathematics Professional Development Present by Judy Anderson, National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics

2.1  An introduction to the various math strands in Grades 4, 7, & 10 Presented by Steve Barnes, principal at Holmes Elementary in Spokane, & Tom Boyce, Math Helping Corps, OSPI
This session will serve as an introduction to the math strands.  It is designed to give administrators a background in the various math strands that are assessed through the WASL. Repeated in session 4.1.

2.2  Math Helping Corps Staff Development Model Presented by Steve DePaul, Math Helping Corps Director, OSPI
This session will explain how the very successful Math Helping Corps (MHC) model can work in your building or district.  We will also share information about how the MHC Cadre program can provide help to districts or schools that have funds for a math specialist.  A copy of the MHC Handbook will be distributed to each participant.  Repeated in session 3.2.

This event was facilitated by Judy Anderson, Regional Director of Western Region Two, National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics.

Keynote Speaker:  Dr. Tim Kanold, Superintendent of Stevenson High School District 125, has presented nationally on issues of effective use of data, building a learning culture and moving from good to great.  He will be addressing the role of you, the leader, in creating, building and sustanining an authentic learning community.

3.3  Facilitating Teacher Learning - A Videocase Approach Presented by Cathy Carrol, National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics
Video can provide authentic and vivid images of professional development that can be used to study facilitation moves.  This session will employ video as a tool to engage participatns in critical analysis and discussion of the issues and challenges leaders typically face when enacting mathematics professional development.

4.2  A Curriculum Sampling Presented by Sally Stratton and Brent Howard, ESD 101 Math Specialists
This session will serve as an introduction to the various math curricula available.  It is designed to give administrators a working background knowledge of curricula as they move towards adoptions and curriculum alignments.
