Title 1 Schools

Title I is a federally funded program designed to help students who need extra intervention support in school. Title I is based on the idea that all students can succeed. The state sets high academic standards that each child is expected to work toward achieving. The Port Angeles Middle School staff and parents work together to plan and implement programs to help students  accelerate their learning.

There are two kinds of Title I programs. A Title I targeted assistance program identifies individual children who need extra assistance in the areas of reading and/or math. Students are eligible for the program based upon teacher recommendation and individual testing. Each school decides which grade levels and subjects to target and serve.

Another type of Title I program is a school-wide program. Stevens Middle School is a school-wide program. Schools may choose to operate a school-wide program when more than 40% of their students come from low-income families. In this program model, all students can receive Title I services as needed.

Characteristics of Title One Programs
Title I programs provide instruction for students that is supplemental to the regular education program and coordinates and supports the instruction of the basic education teacher. A yearly plan is written at each school, including a parent compact and a parent involvement policy. Educational goals are determined for each student and are evaluated frequently through formal and informal assessments. Students are given extra support in reading or math to accelerate their learning, usually in individual or small group settings. Parents are notified of student progress several times throughout the year. They are strongly encouraged to become involved in their child's education both in and out of school.

Part of Title 1 programs is that the learning goals are evaluated.  This is done in a couple of ways.  First the school evaluates and writes the goals in CSIP- Continuous School Improvement Plan. In addition student WASL scores, in class benchmark tests, and other classroom progress is used to remediate with any student who is struggling.  We use our Title 1 monies in the language arts.

Staff, parents, and students are asked to sign the School/Student Compact (Title I) yearly.

LAP is a state funded program.  We use this program to fund extra help in mathematics.
